Why Should Veterinary Hospitals Adopt Technology to Improve Care?

Healthcare Business Review

Computerization is a necessity while practicing veterinary. Technological solutions can help enhance patient communication, improve the diagnostic potential, and combine the business functionality.

FREMONT, CA: As technological improvements continue to advance, the height of care veterinarians can offer, affordability, and accessibility have allowed more extensive integration into smaller practices. Diagnostic lab equipment has become easier to obtain and manage in-house, implementing more immediate results that can easily integrate into electronic patient charts.

Laparoscopic and laser surgery gives less invasive processes and shorter recovery time. At the same time, diagnostic imaging like the CT scan, ultrasound, and MRI permits more advanced diagnosis and offer baselines for care before and after. The diagnostic imaging allows options for larger animals that includes more in-depth looks into the head and digestive tract, possible use in neurologic, orthopedic and soft tissue treatment, and studying heart diseases.

The practice of pet microchipping is enhancing. Along with placing the implants, vets record pet registration information in microchip manufacturer databases, which are connected through the American Animal Hospital Association's lookup tool.

With so many new diagnostic capabilities, vet practice software has evolved to combined with laboratory and diagnostic tools and to streamline data, lab results, and images directly into a patient's medical record. This data capture is shared with other veterinary specialists for treatments, consultations, training, or educational purposes. The Internet-based platforms also allow vets to share and access data in a central repository. This level of integration also provides an opportunity to connect to mobile devices to enable veterinarians to obtain data for off-site appointments, producer calls, or equine visits.

By improving patient quality care, it enhances communication between the veterinary practice and the patient base enables numerous opportunities for repeat visits. The animal offices can help from sending appointment reminders for vaccines, seasonal parasite control, and grooming appointments, by postal mail or electronic communication. Combined software platforms available in the marketplace provide opportunities to sort by appointment dates, conditions, and season. Many practices further utilize this data to offer seasonal care or yearly packages, including preventive care, dental cleaning, emergency visits, and discounts onboarding, grooming, pharmaceuticals, and nutraceuticals.
